Tonight, Slovenia will choose its representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon. The winner of EMA will be chosen by a combination of jury votes and public votes. Eight songs will compete in the national final. Here are my thoughts about the songs:

Lea Sirk with Hvala, ne!

I don’t know if this type of music is still popular in 2018, but it’s certainly different. The song is more suitable for the radio, than for a live performance. I have nothing bad to say about her vocals, but the song isn’t that great live. There’s just something weird about watching this song being performed on stage. 5/10

Indigo with Vesna

This song is very calming, and quite nice. But it’s certainly not suitable for the Eurovision Song Contest. There’s too little going on in both the song as the performance. The flowers on her head do fit with the song but I keep looking at them. The flowers will be the only thing I remember about this song, I think. 4/10

Ina Shai with Glow

The song will be performed in English during the national final, but there’s only a Slovenian version available on YouTube. I have to say that I probably won’t like the English version as much as this one. I think that the song really fits the native language. I can’t help but think of Jamala when seeing the performance, it has a lot of similar elements. I don’t really like the song, it’s too ordinary for me. 3/10

BQL with Promise

Same thing as with the previous song, this song will be performed in English during the national final. I am a big fan of BQL and I think that they should have represented Slovenia at ESC last year. Their song last year was certainly better than the one from this year, but I still like it. The performance is very original and memorable. I’m really looking forward to the English version of this song. 6/10

Marina Martensson with Blizu

Although she’s a great singer, this song is so boring. This song goes nowhere, nothing happens on stage. I don’t really get how this song managed to make it to the final. The performance is even filmed in a weird way. 2/10

Lara Kadis with Zdaj sem tu

The beginning of the song is great with beautiful sounds. And then she starts singing. It’s not that it’s bad, but in the chorus I hardly hear her since the backing vocals sing louder than her. And I don’t get why she’s dressed like a princess. The song is alright but certainly needs improvements. 5/10

Proper with Ukraden cvet

The language really stands out with this song and that’s nice. I just have the feeling that he sometimes doesn’t sing loud enough to top the music. The song is slow, which isn’t immediately bad but there’s just not much going on with this song. The stage is filled with instruments, which makes it look a bit cheap in my opinion. 4/10

Nuška Drašček with Ne zapusti me zdaj

I just hate how she doesn’t stand up straight. I get that she wants to look dangerous and threatening into the camera and her look is quite nice, but that adds nothing to the song. It’s not a bad song, but it’s very outdated. This would have worked fifteen years ago, but not in 2018. 3/10
